The Role of Psychology in Mathematics

First, I think why we must study mathematic, I think mathematic very complicated and make me confuse. I never think I will study mathematic education in university. When I was student in primary and secondary school, I don’t like mathematic. Obviously mathematic is very important for our live Mathematic is basic of science. Every our activity have relation with mathematic, without Mathematic our live can’t go on. If first you think you can do something, you can do it and if you think, you can’t do it so you lose and failed. Psychology is very important to help us study mathematic.
If you know Mathematic deeper, I am sure you will love Mathematic because mathematic is enjoyable. Yeah but we must patient, diligent, and enthusiasm. The teacher of Mathematic should know and understand character of each student because the student came from different culture, class, and religion. If the teacher killer, the student fell scared and afraid. There, Psychology holds the important role. The teacher must encourage or make situation that motivated the student.
Mathematics have high glorious values, mathematic can help someone form the good character. If we study mathematic, we study find truth, to find it we need accuracy, carefulness, patience, and we must believe that we can find it. Mathematic is abstract knowledge, but it is important, this analogs with our religion, we believe that the good although we can’t see the good and without our religion our live will not go on.
When I ask my friend about mathematics, she is student in psychology education, she answer that Mathematic enjoyable if we can solve the Mathematic problem and if we can’t do it we will sad and resentful. Therefore, the teacher must innovative.

What I Can Reflect about Psychological Aspects, If the Student is Confronted with the Function Questions

1. Determine the formula of function g(x)= x – 1 and find the value for x = -4 and x = 3!

2. Determine h (-5) if h(x) = -3x + 4 and find the value of c if h(c) = -8!

The above questions about function which was delivered in Junior High School by mathematic teacher. Every student has different respond with above questions. Most of mathematic teacher deliver the knowledge with conventional method or teacher center so the student always wait the teacher give the solution of the question which have been given by teacher.

The teacher should know about function deeper so the teacher can control the student. This is definition of function ,A function ƒ from a set X to a set Y associates to each element x in X an element y = ƒ(x) in Y. Note that X and Y need not be different sets; it is possible to have a function from a set to itself.

Most of the student have psychological aspects, If the student is confronted with above question, we can clasificate it to three step, they are When the student look and get the questions, when the student try to solve the questions, and when the student have finished the questions.

· When the student look and get the above questions

When the above questions given to the student, most of students annoyed. In their mind “it’s not important for me”, “I don’t know the solution”, “Who and what is X and Y??”, “Why must X and Y”, ”Are the questions have solution, I think aren’t” etc. They regard the function hasn’t connection with their life.

But there are several students that enthusiast with the question. They feel challenge to find the solution and then they begin try to thinking finished the question.

· When the when the student try to solve the questions

After they are given the question, they try solve and finished the problem. The students who aren’t ready before and he don’t like mathematic will solve the question slowly. On the other hand the student who ready before will find the solution fastly. They fell happy when solve the problem.

· When the student have finished the questions

The student who find and finished the problem will happy, enthusiast, and smile. They curious to solve other problem. While, the student who can’t find the solution will sad and trauma to solve the same problem again.

The The readiness, do exercise, and the result are very important in teaching and learning. If the student ready to participate teaching and learning so the student will get the knowledge easy and fastly. If the students often do exercise, they solve and finish the question easily. If the result is good and they find the solution of problem they will happy and enjoy the lesson.

Quantitative Methods to Know Enthusiast of Students in Study Mathematic in a School

Mathematic is the basic of science knowledge. At present almost of student regard that mathematic is annoyed and complicated but this information must be proofed so we can know the real condition of student in study mathematic. The research give us many benefit, one of them that important is we can create the condition that suitable with character each of student and we can arrange ideal plan of teaching.

In this research we use quantitative method. Quantitative research is the systematic scientific investigation of quantitative properties and phenomena and their relationships. The objective of quantitative research is to develop and employ mathematical models, theories and/or hypotheses pertaining to natural phenomena. The process of measurement is central to quantitative research because it provides the fundamental connection between empirical observation and mathematical expression of quantitative relationships.

One of the goals of psychological science is to understand human behavior. But before we can understand it, we have to be able to describe it. In some sense, descriptive statistics is one of the bridges between measurement and understanding. Use of inferential and descriptive statistics is rarely an either-or proposition. With a data set and array of research questions, we are usually interested in both describing and making inferences about the results. We describe the data, find reliable differences or relationships, and estimate population values for the reliable findings

This is the step to know Enthusiasts of Students in Study Mathematic in a School with Quantitative Methods:

In this research we must select the school that will be observed. first we select the population of research. Then we select sample from population by simple random which all of member in population have same chance. Every class we take 10 people which mathematics teacher every class is different. Then we observe the condition of mathematics teaching learning every class of sample. Next we spread questioner for the student and we interview the student about mathematic teaching learning in each of class. Are they enthusiasts with mathematic??? And the reason of their answer. Then we see the academic data of each student who is sample. Next, we account the mean, modus, median, percentile, etc. We can representative the data with histogram, distribution frequency table, circle diagram etc. We analyst relation of academic data with the result of questioner and interview.

We can conclude the enthusiast of student in study mathematic with see the research.
